He became a monk because...
It was July 1505 when Martin was was caught in a scary thunderstorm. He was afraid to die so he shouted out “Save me, St Anna, and I shall become a monk. Martin survived and entered the Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt and kept his promise, even though he knew that he would disappoint his parents. This was tough for him because growing up he was taught that God spoke in thunder, tortured the souls of dead sinners with dreadful punishments, and because of that he feared God and was afraid to go to Heaven.
All monks had to do hard labor to officially become a monk. The first few weeks were tough because he had to scrub floors, clean kitchens, and barns early in the morning. He had to wake up every morning at 1 or 2 to do the first prayer of 7 prayers for the day. When Martin officially became a monk, he was allowed to say mass, to serve at the altar, and to touch holy bread and wine for the first time. Months Later, he went as long as 3 days without food, water, and tortured himself by sleeping on the stone floor, and praying for hours and hours.
